Sometimes Parents Just Need to Get Away

Did your breakfast consist of leftover baby food smeared on toast? Would you like to speak two sentences to your spouse without interruption? If you answered “yes!” then it’s time for an adults-only getaway. The following experiences provide couples with the opportunity to rekindle their relationships in a variety of settings, all close to the Puget Sound area. Now’s the time to call Grandma to watch your angels while you and your spouse enjoy some much needed time together.

Ashford Washington, near Mt. Rainer National Park
Imagine a leisurely drive through forests and scenic outlooks. You sip lattes while speaking in full sentences. Ahhhh—it’s almost paradise. Actually Almost Paradise is your destination. These four secluded cabins include a private hot tub, kitchen or kitchenette and plenty of videos to borrow. If you want privacy, just head to your cabin and lock yourself away. If you want to socialize, join the owners, Ron and Carol around an evening bonfire with other guests. The cabins are immaculate, the bathrobes are fluffy, and best of all…no children allowed!

Skagit Valley Casino
You’ve seen billboards advertising casinos in the Puget Sound area. Why would anyone stay at a casino for a weekend getaway? For a great time, that’s why! The Skagit Valley Casino south of Bellingham offers a unique experience for gamblers and non-gamblers alike. The bright lights and festive atmosphere immediately put you in an upbeat mood. Casino suites offer whirlpool baths with double sided fireplaces. Pure luxury! Sure, you can grab a tasty sandwich in the deli, or you can eat in the upscale, romantic Moon Beach restaurant. On our stay, we attended a Patty Loveless concert and joined in the hootin’ and hollerin’ with other country western fans. Think of it. In one location, you can stay in a hotel suite, enjoy a gourmet meal, attend a concert and try your luck in the casino!

Sure you’ve hit the usual tourist spots in Seattle. But have you tried kayaking on Lake Union? Rent kayaks from the Northwest Outdoor Center for a relaxing paddle on Lake Union. Friendly staff gives directions so you’ll quickly be paddling past luxury yachts and colorful houseboats. After your outdoor experience, it’s only a short drive to the W Hotel. Warning: this is not your kid-friendly Best Western. The W is sleek and sophisticated, even though most parents don’t feeling sleek and sophisticated while raising children. That’s the point of a getaway…to experience a “lifestyle” different from the everyday.W’s lobby and guestrooms are a pleasant (although dimly lit) oasis of tranquility. Unless of course, you want to visit the W Cafe where the energy level rivals a two-year old’s. Try both. Spend time in the upbeat bar and then enjoy your serene black and white room, complete with a soothing desktop fountain. Very Yin, very Yang and very adult.

The Spirit of Washington Dinner Train combines entertainment, food, and a trip to a winery without having to worry about traffic. Simply relax in a vintage rail car while enjoying a three course gourmet dinner. Some evenings the entertainment includes interactive Murder Mystery performances or magic shows.
